Effective annual yield before taxes (interest retained, no withdrawals or rider charges), at the premium band shown under each carrier name; other bands and products pay different rates. Simple-interest products show their published schedule beneath the figure. Highlighted cells are the highest effective yield at that term. “Under review” means A.M. Best is reconsidering that rating. Illustrative, not quotes or offers; annuities are not FDIC-insured — guarantees rest on the insurer’s claims-paying ability. Confirm current terms with a licensed professional.

How MYGA rates compare to CDs, Treasuries, and savings

ProductListed rate
Market average, 5-year MYGA (illustrative)5.59%
5-year CD national avg1.41%
1-year CD national avg1.76%
5-year Treasury yield5.02%
10-year Treasury yield5.24%
High-yield savings (representative top online APY)4.25%

CD figures are FDIC national deposit rates — an average across all insured institutions; top online CDs pay well above it, so compare a specific contract's effective yield against a specific CD's APY. Benchmarks as of 2026-10; point-in-time. See the MYGA vs. CD analysis.

Benchmark sources

CD figures: the average is the FDIC national deposit rate published 2026-10-19 (a regulator survey of all insured institutions); the top figure is an hypothetical 5-year CD APY, the same assumption used in the MYGA-vs-CD guide and glossary worked examples — comparisons against the top MYGA rate use the top CD figure so both legs are on a top-of-market basis. Treasury yields are the constant-maturity par yields at the 2026-10-09 close (Treasury daily par yield curve). High-yield savings is a representative top online APY that is ongoing and requires no minimum balance (verified 2026-10-13) — promotional and new-customer-only accounts advertise more but carry minimum-balance, deposit-requirement, or expiry conditions. Point-in-time — confirm current figures before relying on a specific spread.

MYGA rate FAQs

What MYGA rates are shown on this page?

Illustrative MYGA rate examples by term (published headline rates): 2-year: 4.80% from Aspida Life (A-); 3-year: 5.70% from Aspida Life (A-); 5-year: 6.30% from Aspida Life (A-); 7-year: 6.35% from Aspida Life (A-); 10-year: 6.00% from Lincoln Financial (A). These are published rates for one named product per carrier, verified against public rate pages on the date shown — still not live quotes, and your rate depends on premium band, state and issue age. Two cautions: the highest rate at a term often comes from a lower-rated carrier, and some products credit interest on a simple-interest or first-year-bonus basis, meaning the effective annual yield over the term is lower than the headline number.

Are MYGA rates higher than CD rates?

Generally yes, but compare them carefully. The FDIC 5-year CD national deposit rate is 1.41% — that is a survey of all insured institutions, and top online banks pay considerably more. On the annuity side, some headline MYGA rates are credited on a simple-interest or first-year-bonus basis, so the stated rate overstates what you actually earn over the term. To compare honestly, put a specific contract's effective annual yield next to a specific CD's APY — never a headline rate against an APY. The other trade-offs: MYGAs carry surrender charges, tie up your money for the term, and are not FDIC-insured (state guaranty associations provide limited coverage instead, subject to per-insurer caps).

What's the minimum to buy a MYGA?

For the products on this page, minimums range from $2,000 (Nationwide) to $25,000 (Pacific Life); most fall between $10,000 and $25,000. The rate you see is often reserved for a larger premium band — the band each rate was read at is shown under the carrier name.

Can I lose money in a MYGA?

Yes, in some circumstances. Your credited rate is contractually guaranteed for the term, so you cannot lose money to market performance. But you can get back less than you paid in if you surrender early: surrender charges, and on many contracts a market value adjustment, can cut into principal. A MYGA is also not FDIC-insured — it is backed solely by the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability, and if the insurer fails, recovery depends on your state guaranty association, whose limits vary by state and cap what is covered per insured person per insurer. That is why financial-strength ratings matter: some of the highest headline rates on this page come from carriers A.M. Best rates C+ (Marginal), with those ratings under review with negative implications. Over a long term, inflation can also erode the purchasing power of a fixed rate.

How is a MYGA different from a CD?

Three big differences: (1) MYGAs often pay more than a same-term CD, but the gap moves with rates, so compare a specific product's effective yield against a CD you can actually open; (2) MYGA interest is tax-deferred until withdrawal vs. CD interest taxed annually; (3) MYGAs have surrender schedules while CDs have simpler early-withdrawal penalties.

Are these rates available in my state?

Most A-rated carriers are available in 45+ states, but some MYGA-specialist carriers like Atlantic Coast Life and Sentinel Security don't operate in CA, NY, and OR. Get a quote to see what's available where you live.

How we collect MYGA rates

These are published rates for one named product per carrier, verified against public rate pages on the date shown at the top of this page. They are illustrative — not quotes, offers, or solicitations, and not a live rate feed. Four things to understand before comparing them: (1) Crediting basis. Where a product credits simple interest with a first-year bonus (labeled beneath its figure), it does not compound, so we show its effective annual yield as the main figure and the published headline rate beneath — compare effective yields, not headline rates. Effective yields assume interest stays in the contract with no withdrawals or rider charges, before taxes. (2) Carrier strength. The highest rate at a term frequently comes from a lower-rated carrier; a rate from a carrier rated below A- (or one under A.M. Best review) carries meaningfully more risk, and with an annuity the insurer's claims-paying ability is the guarantee. (3) Not FDIC-insured. Annuities are not bank products; state guaranty associations provide limited backstop coverage subject to per-insurer caps that vary by state. (4) Your rate will differ. Actual rates depend on premium size, state of residence, age, and carrier filing, and are not guaranteed until the contract is issued. Confirm current terms with a licensed insurance professional.
